My story, how I got the "itch to travel".

It all started as a youngster growing up in a suburb of Chicago.  Dad worked for and retired from American Airlines.  I recall him getting $10.00 passes to fly to Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Detroit, Boston, and Knoxville.  He used to take me to Chicago O'Hare to watch "the birds" take off and land.  He taught me the various types of aircraft, their use on U.S. and overseas routes, and seating configurations.  I always prefer a window seat.  To this day, I still go "bird" watching at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson.

Fast forward to my 20 years in the Air Force.  I saw a little piece of the world spending time in Europe (England, Holland, Belgium, and Germany) as well as Central America.  After my retirement, both my wife and I caught the "travel bug" and continued our travels.  Out of that came a strong desire to plan our trips and provide travel advice to family and friends.

Allow me to assist you with travel advice and itinerary planning.

7 ways to cut travel costs

Recent travel related data shows that travel costs are down a little bit versus last year.  There are tested ways to save money on your next trip, such as traveling outside of peak season, booking early, going midweek and looking outside the hot spots, experts said.  Total travel costs — including airfare, hotels, rental cars, dining out and entertainment — are down an average 2% in the past year, according to the NerdWallet Travel Price Index. Jetsetters can expect travel this year to be a bit cheaper relative to 2023, especially for domestic trips, experts said.

1. Avoid peak season such as during the busier months of June through August.  For example, on average, travelers can save 32%, or $112, on round-trip domestic airfare by going during September and October instead of peak summer months, according to Hopper data.

2. Travel midweek — For most locales, airfare and lodging are significantly cheaper midweek relative to the weekend, meaning flexible travelers can score big savings.  The easy rule: The dates that are probably the most convenient are probably the most expensive.  Sunday is generally the most expensive day to fly, data shows. Domestic airfare is, on average, 24% lower by flying on a Tuesday, translating to savings of about $85 a ticket, according to NerdWallet.  Domestic and international flights that leave on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday have historically been 12% cheaper than weekend departures, according to Google Flights data.  The midweek rule of thumb generally applies regardless of destination.

3. Book early

The Covid-19 pandemic led Americans to defer trip purchases to the last minute, and that behavior has persisted. However, waiting too long to book, airfare especially, can be costly.  Experts recommend booking flights about one to three months ahead for U.S. trips, and even further ahead, maybe three to six months or more, for international trips.  Hotels are a bit trickier. In big cities with many options, the best prices will be just 48 hours ahead of check-in, Hopper found. However, best prices are typically one to two months out for popular destinations such as Miami or Cancun, and rooms in popular vacation cities can book up early.

4. Try a ‘dupe destination’ (i.e. swapping a popular destination for a lesser-known spot that's got a similar vibe or familiar amenities)

Data shows many travelers sought out cheaper duplicates, or “dupes,” of pricey destinations in 2023.  Applied broadly, tourists should look beyond the tourist hot spots and consider less-popular areas to save money, experts said.  For example, Europe is consistently the top destination for Americans traveling abroad. Round-trip airfare can easily cost more than $1,000 to many top European locales. Flying to certain cities can be much cheaper, though. For example, a flight to Lisbon or Porto in Portugal averages about $650 to $700. Similarly, flying to Athens instead of Santorini can save almost $400 on a round-trip ticket, while going to Naples instead of Palermo in Italy would save about $125. Likewise, those eyeing a trip to South America would spend $375 for an average round-trip ticket to Cartagena, Colombia, compared to about $900 to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Those going to Australia pay an average $1,214 to Sydney, but almost $1,500 to Melbourne.

Airline Travel

Frontier’s newest upsell:

Empty middle seats, more legroom at the front of the plane.  Frontier said its new “UpFront Plus” option will include an open middle seat in the first two rows of the plane.    On flights starting April 10, Frontier will offer UpFront Plus in the first two rows of its Airbus planes, where it will block the sale of the middle seat. Those seats will also include four to five inches more legroom compared with most of the seats on the planes, an airline spokeswoman said.  Prices start at $49, for bookings made by March 20 for flights between April 10 and April 30, but the spokeswoman said the seat option “is not intended as a limited time offer.”  Fellow budget airline Spirit Airlines offers the “Big Front Seat” at the front of the plane for an upcharge.

Major airlines raise fees for checked bags:

A handful of airlines — Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, JetBlue Airways and United Airlines — have raised their fees for checked bags this year. United raised its fee to $40 for a first checked bag at the airport, and to $35 for those who prepay online at least 24 hours before their flight — both of which are a $5 increase.  American has similarly upped its fees. JetBlue also recently increased its checked-bag fee to $45, and Alaska to $35.
